Our Story
Welcome to Merkato Restaurant. Since opening in October 2002, Merkato has proudly served authentic Ethiopian cuisine in the heart of Winnipeg. Our passion has always been to share the rich flavors, traditions, and hospitality of Ethiopia with our community. Our menu is known for its traditional Ethiopian taste and carefully prepared dishes made from fresh ingredients and authentic spices. Guests especially enjoy our Special Derek Tibs — tender lean beef sautéed with onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and seasoned butter, served mild or spicy. Another customer favorite is our Special Kitfo, prepared in the true Ethiopian style. Every meal is served with injera, Ethiopia’s traditional flatbread made from wheat or teff. We also offer imported Ye’Teff Injera, a delicious gluten-free option. For vegetarian guests, we proudly serve a variety of flavorful dishes including Ye’shiro Wot and Beyaynetu. For over two decades, Merkato Restaurant has been more than just a place to eat — it has been a place where family, culture, and community come together through food.

It was my first time in Winnipeg and I stumbled upon this restaurant as the one I was looking for was closed. I am so glad it was. The owner is warm and welcoming. He explained each dish patiently and answered all our questions. Definitely a must visit!!!Posted on Google KRISTIN ANNABLETrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. There were six of us and We got the veg combo and the meat combo , plus an extra lamb dish. So much flavour and variety. It was so much food for an incredibly reasonable price. Great way to feed a big group.Posted on Google Charlotte ConnollyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The food and service here is incredible! The food is amazing—authentic doro wat, kitfo, and fresh injera that taste just like home. The vibe is warm and lively with great Ethiopian music in the background. The bar is fun and welcoming, and the traditional coffee ceremony was the perfect touch. Staff were super friendly and made us feel right at home. Highly recommend Merkato Restaurant if you want real Ethiopian flavors, culture, and a great atmosphere!Load more
